iPod Touch vs. iPhone

Update (Apr 11, 2011): This post has been updated to reflect the most current information on iPod Touch vs iPhone.

iPod Touch vs iPhone

Decisions, decisions: Should you get an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 or iPod Touch, a near-replica of the iPhone that works in generally the same way but has fewer features?

I own the iPhone 4, but I’ve done some research on both the iPod Touch and the iPhone for this feature comparison.

See how the iPod Touch compares to the iPhone in my iPod touch vs. iPhone overview:

iPod Touch vs. iPhone

Every feature on the iPod Touch is also on the iPhone. But not every feature on the iPhone is on the iPod Touch.

First let me show you the features iPhone DOES have, then let me show you what the iPod Touch lacks. Here is a breakdown of features for the iPhone 3G (no longer available from Apple, but available from other places used), iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the fourth-generation (4g) iPod Touch.

In summary, the iPod Touch runs on the same software as the iPhone, but LACKS mobile features like a cellular signal, GPS, data connectivity (3G/EDGE), and of course that pesky 2-year contract with AT&T, which is required to buy an iPhone.

The iPod touch is also thinner and usually cheaper than the iPhone depending on your agreement with your service provider.

Apple usually makes iPod Touch users pay $10-$20 for major OS updates, while iPhone users get them included as part of the service contract.

iPod touch is a great basic media device, especially for children. An iPod Touch is also great for “non-techy” people who don’t require a full-blown mobile computer and telephone with a mobile service contract. But if you want to go all out and you want the ultimate portable assistant, then go with the iPhone.

Keep in mind: Apple often issues major updates to both the iPod Touch and the iPhone, usually during summer, so it might be worth waiting it out so your new device doesn’t start becoming obsolete a couple months after you buy it.

iPhone vs. iPod Touch: What do you think?

What is your media device of choice, iPhone or iPod touch? Why?

  4. The thing I thing is that the iPhone is better because u don’t have to have to have an app to be able to text and via at&t u can get unlimited calls moble to moble. I have the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4gs. Both better then the iPod 4 touch. The iPhone 3GS has a better speed and camera. Yes the iPod 4 touch has a front camera and the iPhone 3GS don’t. But the iPhone 4 does so really in facts the iPhone is better if u use it for what’s its meant to be used for and not just to have a phone. I use my iPhone for everything including work and it holds where the iPod doesn’t

  6. I think i-Touch is batter then iPhone.
    i-touch–iPhone 4
    smaller–bigger
    cheap–expensive
not heat up while use–heat up while use
    weight less–more then i-touch
    video> iPhone
    cortex a8 processor>apple processor
    retina display–not retina display
more private(the person stand besides you cannot see easily what are you doing)–display same for beside person as you viewing(all angels no difference in display, may be its + point for you but not for me).
no one tracing you–gsm network can trace you
no problem if turned off–the person you are is offline(dad think you must be on date with girl)
    better display then iPhone.

  7. Sigh, let’s try to end this “iPod vs. iPhone” debate here shall we?

I’ll talk about the 4th gen iOS devices because there is no iPod touch equivalent to the newly released iPhone 4S.

For starters in terms of actual functionally, the iPod touch can mimic every major function of the iPhone save the compass. How you ask? Well let me list them.

    1.) The Phone
Here’s the biggie, iPod touch is fully capable of making phone calls
and text messages with 3rd party applications, my application of use
TextFree simply because well it’s free. However there are even more
sophisticated apps such as Line2 that are non subscription and cost
let than $100 for a year of service. Well one problem you say, I’m
never in a wi-fi hotspot. Well lucky you because in 2011 we have
fast 3G/4G mi-fi devices which usually cost substantially let per
month than normal cellular contracts and allow multiple devices to
    benefit from you roaming internet.
*A quick point the first 3 generation of iPod touch do NOT have
built in microphones and the 1st gen device does not allow vocal
input at all. I recommend headphones with mics for the 2nd gen and
up but the 4g is capable of being used as a phone without them.

    2.) GPS
Honestly using your iPhone as a GPS device probably isn’t the best
idea but it will suffice if you must. Likewise with a mi-fi device
iPod touch can perform the same function but a Garmin or the like
would probably be the best choice.

You know I thought there were more points I could make but I cannot think of any, the iPod touch really is the better way to go. Yes the iPhone’s camera (in terms of pictures) is better and yes it has a compass but honestly it’s camera still is no match for a basic digital you can pick up for little to nothing and the video quality on both devices is virtually identical. Oh and compasses are usually used in survival situations, not the best place to rely on a battery dependent, non water proof, easily damaged electronic device but it could come in useful, who knows.

So really that’s all, if anyone else thinks of a valid point I missed please feel free to point it out.

It’s no problem for you. I know camera is sometimes can be suck but you still buy Lumix camera is useful and dope scene. Peace up.

I hate ATT their customer service sucks, and their rates are stupid high. Just wondering if its better to go with an i-touch with Skype or an i-phone with a crappy ATT plan?

    Reply
    • i use line2 on my ipod touch. i use to use skype. line2 is so much better in clarity and you can also text with it. it much like the iphones. you do have to buy the plan which is 49.95 for six months can cancel anytime. you get unlimited calling in the usa and canada and texting. has push notification so if you don’t have it open it will let you know of text’s and calls. has caller id and call waiting and call forwarding included. i carry with me a mifi so i am connected wherever i go. i use the ipod touch 4 as it has the microphone built in so i don’t have to carry headsets. this is an amazing product, very clear just as clear as cell phones most of the time and no lag with it like skype. hopes this helps

  17. This is comparing apples (no pun) and oranges. The iPod Touch is not intended for use as a phone, although let me say that last weekend I had a perfect Skype call (audio) with my daughter in China on my iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is a pocket wifi-enabled internet device that offers some very impressive features. If it’s on the web, it’s on your iPod (except of course if it’s Flash, but that’s another topic). Email, calendaring, YouTube, Facebook, Linkedin, a basic video camera, retina display, bluetooth, basic wifi-delivered GPS service, and hundreds of thousands of apps are all there. And it’s an MP3 player that connects to iTunes. It’s an excellent device. Why compare it with something it’s obviously not intended to compete with? The iPhone is a great phone but it’s only available on one carrier that seems to have a lot of problems. If you need to get online with an iPod touch away from home or office with your own personal wifi hotspot, you can get connected anywhere the Sprint or Verizon networks are available by using a MiFi device (smaller than a deck of cards) without having to lock yourself into 2 years of the AT&T messwork. The iPod Touch 4G has a lot going for it.

    • Good comments, with one noteable omission. Lots of kids are using their parents “handmedown” 3GS iPhone’s b/c it is much cheaper to get an iPhone 3GS($100) or 4 ($200) than to buy a touch. The AT&T issue is moot, given the parents are already customers.

  18. I think that if you dont need internet or email out and about, and can wait to check facebook when you have wifi, it is better to get the ipod touch. You save the monthly contract price! Just use a regular phone for phone calls and texts. If you want to do some web stuff just by a phone that has mobile web. You can do more than you think is possible on there. I have an ipod touch and i don’t miss any of the iphone features because i can do most of it on my regular phone which costs about 30 a month. It has mobile web so i can do some email and check websites that are not complicated. It is a better deal to get the ipod touch and save the money for a new laptop or something instead.

    • In terms of saving money for me its better to whether use Android Galaxy S2, or purchase iPod touch + MiFi (device which you can carry with yourself to have WiFi connection always)

  19. iPod Touch as your media device, Blackberry 9700 for phone. iPhone is crappy in terms of phone capability/ies.

    Reply
  20. I say, it all depends on your purpose. iPod touch is obviously an improved version of iPod. So if you are into just music or the old iPod “thing” and your budget is also limited (considering iPod Touch is cheaper than iPhone) you should settle with iPod. But if you want more, and you NEED the features found in iPhone then go for iPhone. I think it’s a miss match. For me it would be more appropriate to compare iPhone with Blackberry than comparing it with iPod touch. iPhone came from the line of mobile phones while iPod Touch came from iPod (generally for music, photos and video viewing purpose)

  27. iPhone is way better. I got an iPod touch for Christmas and it’s TERRIBLE. The wifi sucks, you can only get like half of the apps in the app store, it doesn’t have a phone, camera or texting (those apps that supposedly do that are fake) and barely any apps are tested on the itouch, so they have bugs and crashes, and the iPhone 3Gs is now only $100 and my iPod cost more than that, so cost is not an issue. iPhone, for sure. And, Itouch had terrible battery life.

    • Honest answer here..
My niece has iTouch and likes it. She is able to make video calls when in WiFi area and uses Skype.

I went with iPhone.. needed smart phone, address book (not just phone numbers). I was already paying nearly the monthly fees on my old phone (LG Neon)

Recently went on trip and it was Blackberry GPS vs iPhone GPS. iPhone won hands down. Cloudy day and Blackberry couldn’t stay connected and had us going way out of our way. Wish the iPhone was voice, tho.

Apps are great… and more plentiful than apps for Blackberry. You don’t use them daily, tho, but I use several and not just games.

If you are already paying $30 a month for a phone plan SWITCH to iPhone, it is soooooo worth it.

I use the phone a lot and battery only lasts a day for me. The speakers could be better.

My opinion and I have used both.

If the Touch will allow access to html files, it will go far in the education field, esp where cellphones are not allowed

Now for me, don’t care about games, music, just want to hopefully use skype/similar for calls (assuming the mic on new ipod touch works good enough), and mileage logging/mapping (now I think the ipod touch don’t have a gps- correct if wrong, so wondered how good it will work).. Also what about display size, it’s slightly different? So what else i’m I missing?

  51. Steve, this post is a bit outdated, but as of today I believe the iPod Touch and the iPhone have the same screen size.

This is what the Apple site has to say about Maps and location with the iPod touch:

“For iPod touch with Maps, the Maps application provides your approximate location using information based on your proximity to known Wi-Fi networks (when on and available). The more accurate the available information, the smaller the circle identifying your position on the map. The feature is not available in all areas. Known Wi-Fi networks are predominantly in urban areas”

Also, if you are driving, I doubt you would have very accurate location-tracking.

There are tons of free SMS apps out there and with the introduction of free wifi hotspots AROUND the world, such as McDonalds and other hotels, why complain? Hell, if your feeling froggy, Jailbreak, as I did. Restoring solves all problems, no biggie. Current software is 3.0, but you can get what 3.0 offers with 2.2.1 with clippy, a Cydia app.. Jeebus, you all make it harder than it has to beeee. Love you, bye! ^.^

  53. I made my decision not to purchase EITHER. Ipod Touch does not have external speaker nor camera. Ipod phone (not sure of new one) does not have voice turn by turn GPS. Got Blackberry for husband. Keeping my pay as you go phone…. changing to T Mobile. When and if I get touch screen phone, it will be LG Voyager. There you go… my decisions and apple left out altogether

  54. I really don’t like the iphone because the ipod touch is the same. People say if you jail break it you could call people and download apps. But i like the iphone 3gS. It makes more sense because there are lots of fun and different stuff that you can do on it. If you know somebody who has a iphone regular or a ipod touch ask what’s the different. Plus the ipod touch is only $200 at some places or $230. (I never jail breaked though.) And touch is slimer.

  55. Dear Danny,
I completely agree with you except for the fact you are wrong about price, the iphone plan (required) will cost you atleast $50+ per month for the media package. I love the new iphone but for that price i could probably pay off some loans instead of gavinf a fancy peice of electronics. I know it is amazing but you will end up paying an insane amount of $$$$$. If you’re loaded, go for it but dont say i didnt warn you about price.

The thing i dont like is that it is not as thin as the ipod touch. How disappionting. The Iphone 3Gs only costs $199 and + tax $212

What’s this.. if you get 8G you CAN’T upgrade to 16G? This is not just a memory chip? hmmmm definitely a drawback there.

I may wait for 3rd generation.

  59. Beth – 8gigs is farily large. To put things in perspective my computers harddrive is 4 gigs. (on the other hand I dont run microscrap products, nor do I have large ammounts of media files (maybe 1.5-2 gigs total was my max, and never could listen/watch everything over the course of a few days.)

You cant upgrade however, but theres only so much you can rally do at one time, and you can always change what you store on your device.

  67. the difference is mainly that the 2g has internal speakers and doesnt require headphones. there are more differences like software upgrades and more available applications. internet does come on the home screen of the 1g and 2g so no need to jailbreak for internet. jailbreaking will only work on the 1g and 2g if you downgrade the software. the invisible shield is the best case for many reasons, one of which it is invincible, another it was used for military technology originally, another it will be able to fit in an ihome with ease istead of a bulky case that wouldnt, the biggest is it doesnt very much change the original sleek look of the ipodtouch2g and adds grip. 2 million have bee sold. go to google and type in invisble shield homepage.. yes it does come with acharger but only a usb plug so get a wall outlet converter.

But b4 i jailbreak it, does the ipod touch come with internet once u get it or do u have to install it or jailbreak it, or watever. im really not good with getting internet on portabale things.and one more thing: how come i shouldnt get a case why should i get the invisible shield? thanks for the help.

  69. Bria-the ipod touch 2g does come woth a usb charger cable for a usb (thumbrive input) hookup to a computer. I suggest getting a wall plug usb coverter as well because then you dont have to rely on a working computer. Another useful accesorie(spelled right?) is a wireless AA battery charger from office max costco or online. Dont buy a case get the invisible shield and be sure to align it perfectly how you want it when you first install it. The texting is available but through email only to iphone users, you can jailbreak and turn it into a fully functional phone but i dont suggest it. This is all typed from my beloved ipodtouch2g. Have fun and dont be cheap wheb buying accesories-ipodtouch2g

  74. i bought the ipod touch second generation in october for $300 and i absolutely love it. the only real features that the ipod touch lacks compared to the iphone is the camera and microphone(phone). by using new FREE applications you can call other ipod touch or iphone users by downloading truphone which with a headset(with microphone). another FREE app is email2sms which allows you to text iphone users, just put in your email text and their phone number. the camera on the iphone isnt al that god anyway so that isnt quite so big a feature downfall. the games graphics and video is great. thee internal speaker comes in quite useful and is one of my favorite features that the ipod touch first generation didnt have. the ipod, music/itunes is the whole point hence IPODtouch and the music has its own bottom of menu icon link. i researched the ipod touch for atleast a few months and found it to be a better deal in my situation and many to get the ipod touch. i thought it was so good that i started up my own business and sold things to buy the ipod touch and accessories. as for accessories definetely get the griffin wall outlet to usb converter for charging. i absolutely love my ipod touch and i have 110+ free apps allready. i definetely reccomend getting the ipod touch and if you do need a phone then the iphone is the best but get the 3g. sorry for my bad grammar, english, and spelling. thanks for taking the time to read

  78. I think that people should quite arrguing about it and either get the iphone or ipod touch. either you want a cell phone payment or you dont its that simple. it would be cheaper just to go and get a regular old flip phone and get a 8gb ipod touch and call it quites. a payment for the iphone is out of site. i have an ipod touch and a motorolla rokr slider and it works just fine. my cell payment is only 37 dollars a month, that beets 80 to 100 dollar cell payment. so that just gos to show that the ipod touch would be the better choice money wise.

  80. The way i look at it is, that you can get the iphone which is cool and more worker friendly with internet at all.

or you can get the ipod touch, which costs less and really only doesnt have the actual phone and camera.
    but
you NEVER have to worry about internet charges and roaming fees for the internet.

    so.
    there you go
    ipod touch hands down

  83. Well the only difference really is that the iPhone is a phone and the iPod Touch is a new generation of iPods. It is unfair to compare them because they do not fit in the same categories. They may look the same, feel the same, and possibly smell the same. But, they are two very different things. In my opinion the iPod Touch is very very advanced for its matter because how can you compare it to a phone? The iPhone was a big hit in the beginning having internet, GPS etc. and is still the most popular phone. But people treat it as a alternate computer than a phone or mp4. While the iPod Touch is just a better formed mp4 like its little brothers.

And the screen quality difference IS nearly the same. Really, would you actually count that as a defending point as saying the iPhone was better?

Also I forgot to say that the new 2.0 iPod Touch SLIMNESS is incredible. And think about it, it also has built in speakers!

Easy solution on which one to get:

    What you have:

[ ]Do you already have a phone?
    [ ]Do you already have a MP4/iPod?

    What you want/need:

[ ]Do you really think the iPhone is a alternate computer solution for you?
[ ]Do you really think the iPod Touch is too expensive for a iPod?

AFTER YOU DO IT, IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE…

    ——————————

    What you have:

[X]Do you already have a phone?
    [ ]Do you already have a MP4/iPod?

    What you want/need:

[ ]Do you really think the iPhone is a alternate computer solution for you?
[X]Do you really think the iPod Touch is too expensive for a iPod?

    —————————–

PS put an [X] if you do have/want it. Put [ ] if you don’t

    CONCLUSION:

Obviously the iPhone is better. But, if you just wanna watch movies with something thin and cool….I recomend the iPod Touch.

    Thank you,

  84. Well…actually, in my country its easy to afford the call costs, but its pretty hard to buy a iphone. Here the iphone costs about $665 in our currency. So I chose ipod touch as the better deal. It has built in speakers, volume keys, and shares an identical look with the iphone. Except for phone and camera facilities, ipod touch is equal to iphone. Is this true? Or are there any other major differences?

  85. This must be old, the touch has the same features as the iPhone execpt for camere and calling for free on 2.0, the new version even has a built in speaker.

  86. This is a really tough choice. He are some arguments for the iPod Touch:
    -Less battery drain
    -More storage for your buck
-Now has maps and mail, etc.
-Don’t have to worry about dropping your phone when you go to the bar 😉

Bascially, the only thing the iPhone has going for it is that you have all of your devices in one convenient package, so you don’t have to carry your phone separately. I just got a new phone 3 months ago, so I’m wondering if it’s worth it…

IT IS AN MP4 PLAYER, NOT A PHONE…DUH….So why compare the features on the two???? Reason, very simple. The iphone does not work with reguar headphones! I have bose 3 noise cancelling headphones and you cant use stereo with the iphone.

  96. Another noticble difference between the iPod Touch and iPhone is the screen quality. Shades of black are handled much better on the iPhone than the iPod Touch. Apple claimed that the difference is almost unnoticable, but when putting the two side by side that bad quality of the iPod Touch is very noticable.

It’s not something I’m too concerned about, because I’ll be getting an iPod Touch just for it’s internet capabilities and music. Plus, the slick design is to die for. 🙂

  97. Thanks for the iPod Touch info. I’ve been holding out on getting an iPhone and now with the release of the iPod touch at the same time as the price drop of the iPhone my decision is even harder. I’m in Canada so the phone is pretty much useless to me at the moment, but the crippling lack of some of the better features in the iPod touch is really annoying. You can’t even add things to the calendar – why does Apple take AWAY functionality?

Anyhow, this info will help me decide come Sept 28 which one I want. Thanks!
