Will Camping Out for an iPhone be Necessary?

Camping Out

Apple will ship 3 million iPhones to the U.S. for the device’s debut on June 29. That’s a heck of a lot of phones.

In fact, some analysts have predicted that Apple will sell 3 million iPhones by the end of 2007.

So does that mean you’ll be able to pick up an iPhone without having to camp out in front of your local AT&T or Apple store?

I guess that depends on how much demand there is in each particular area versus how many phones will be available in that area.

My guess is that there will be long lines at AT&T and Apple stores nationwide on June 29 and maybe for a few days after before the phones sell out. After that, it will be nearly impossible to get ahold of one until Apple ships more.

But the truth is that no one knows for sure. Early adopters will either love or hate the Apple phones, and that, I think, will largely determine whether their friends and family go out to buy one for themselves.

How about you? Do you plan to camp out to get your iPhone? Or are you going to wait and see what the initial public reaction is and then decide from there?

Normally I would wait and see if I could play with a friend’s before getting my own, but this site wouldn’t be Apple iPhone Review without an Apple iPhone review, so I’m going to take a leap of faith and try to get my hands on one as early as possible.

I’ll be staking out my local AT&T and Apple stores in the days before the release to decide whether a camp-out will be necessary.

  1. I’ll probably need to camp out. Take the day off, I’ve earned it. My birthday will kick off the week, Sunday… so I can’t think of a better present to myself.

  2. Sounds good, Frank. How is that going to work out with the iPhone going on sale at 6pm?

I mean, how will the store handle other customers before that time? Will everyone be in a line aside from the shop while waiting until 6:00?
