No iPhone Insurance from AT&T

I’m disappointed to learn that AT&T may not offer insurance coverage for the iPhone, according to a Think Secret source.

Without insurance, iPhone owners will be gambling each time they leave home with their $500-$600 devices. I’ve had a handful of cell phones lost/stolen/broken in the past, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Nevertheless, there is hope: “An AppleCare for iPhone plan is in the works that would cover the hardware for a period of two years,” Think Secret reports.

Apple offers a similar AppleCare plan for the iPod, which includes 2 years of coverage for $59. That’s about $5 a month for a $250-$350 device. The iPhone plan will likely cost more.

iPhone Gets FCC Approval in US

Apple’s iPhone is now approved for sale in the United States, according to recent FCC documents.

Apple requested that the Federal Communications Commission not release photos of the iPhone or the device’s user manual until 45 days after the certification was granted.

The FCC documents confirm Bluetooth, WiFi and EDGE features on the iPhone, though whether Apple has added additional features to the iPhone remains a mystery until the iPhone’s debut in late June.

June 15: Possible iPhone Launch Date

Apple’s iPhone may launch on June 15, according to an internal AT&T memo sent out yesterday informing employees that “no additional vacation requests will be approved during the launch period (6/15 – 7/15).”

In a statement last month, Apple said the iPhone would debut in “late June,” contrary to an earlier June 11 launch rumor.

It’s possible the cited “launch period” beginning on June 15 may refer to employee preparation for the release, so June 15 may not be the actual launch date.

Leaked AT&T Document Answers Crucial iPhone Questions

Engadget Mobile has leaked an AT&T document revealing answers to some of the questions we’ve been asking about the iPhone.

According to the documents, the iPhone is still on schedule for a June launch. The phone will be priced at $499/$599 with no rebates or subsidies “at this time.” And if you’re out of contract, say in May, AT&T will allow you to sign up for another two years with the iPhone even before the phone arrives in stores — that is, Cingular & Apple stores only.

The document also said iPhone users will have access to Cingular’s MyAccount on the phone as well as via iTunes.
