Leaked AT&T Document Answers Crucial iPhone Questions

Engadget Mobile has leaked an AT&T document revealing answers to some of the questions we’ve been asking about the iPhone.

According to the documents, the iPhone is still on schedule for a June launch. The phone will be priced at $499/$599 with no rebates or subsidies “at this time.” And if you’re out of contract, say in May, AT&T will allow you to sign up for another two years with the iPhone even before the phone arrives in stores — that is, Cingular & Apple stores only.

The document also said iPhone users will have access to Cingular’s MyAccount on the phone as well as via iTunes.

Apple Facing Pre-Release iPhone Problems?

Research firm iSuppli’s checks with iPhone component makers suggest that the iPhone may be experiencing software problems, as evidenced by Apple’s redistribution of resources last week from the now-delayed Leopard OS to the iPhone.

“We’re hearing it’s mostly an issue with the complexity of the device,” said iSuppli analyst Jagdish Rebello. Rebello said Apple is dealing with problems discovered late in the testing phase.

iPhone Will NOT Debut on June 11 – See Proof

Contrary to the speculations of many around the blogosphere, Apple will not release the iPhone on June 11, as evidenced by Apple’s statement yesterday announcing the Leopard OS delay.

“iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned,” said the press release (emphasis mine).

When CNET reported that a Cingular customer service rep. said iPhone would be released June 11, I called 25 Cingular stores to see what they had to say, and none knew of the June 11 release date.

Unless June 11 is “late June,” it seems my suspicions have been confirmed: the iPhone will not come out June 11.

Leopard Release Postponed While Apple Works On iPhone

Leopard iPhone Delay

Apple has postponed the release of its Mac OS X Leopard operating system, originally scheduled for June, to October while the Mac team helps out with prepping the iPhone for its June release.

“iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team,” said Apple today in a press release.

I’m sure the news is a disappointment for those of you dying to upgrade in June, but I think it’s better they take their time than release a bug-ridden product.

“Life often presents tradeoffs,” said Apple, “and in this case we’re sure we’ve made the right ones.”
