WWDC 2010: All About iPhone 4

WWDC iPhone Keynote

Today is the big day. At 1 PM EST, Apple will kick off its 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference and presumably announce the next generation iPhone. Apple has announced a new iPhone in June during all past WWDC conferences since 2007, so there is no reason to believe they won’t do the same this year.

Steve Jobs may reveal news about all kinds of new Apple developments, but I’ll be covering mainly the iPhone-related topics. To keep up with iPhone-specific news on today’s WWDC event, be sure to bookmark this page.

I’m not at the conference myself but I am going to be obsessively following updates from various sources and will be posting them here and on Twitter.

iPhone Updates from WWDC 2010

7:47 AM: It will be another five hours or so before the conference begins, but the rumors are starting to pile up. I have my own hunch that Apple will reveal an iPhone completely different from the one that was leaked.

7:55 AM: A purported promotional poster is circulating through Twitter, claiming the next iPhone is called the “iPhone HD,” but I think the image is a fake.

“iPhone HD” Image Travels Through Twitter: Here’s Why It’s a Fake

There’s an image going around the Twitterverse that purports to be a promotional poster from behind the scenes of today’s WWDC, and according to the image the next iPhone is called the “iPhone HD.”

iPhone HD

Is it Real?

In my opinion, there’s no way this is Apple’s design. Here’s why, based on my own judgment and what some people on Twitter have pointed out:

  • The font used for the “iPhone HD” headline is much too bold, and the letter spacing is oddly wide.
  • “smarter, better, faster” is lower case and missing punctuation, unlike most copy used on Apple.com.
  • The multicolored iPhones in the bottom left corner are not centered.
  • Why would Apple use the BACK of the iPhone as the photo’s main focal point?
  • The subtle swirling lines in the image suggest this is a photo of someone’s computer screen.

Smells like a shameless hoax to me. What do you think? Is the poster certainly real or an obvious fake?

Will the Next iPhone Be a Never-Before-Seen Design?

I can’t help but wonder if tomorrow Steve Jobs will reach into his pocket to unveil the next iPhone and reveal something that looks NOTHING like this:

Gizmodo Secret iPhone

What if the 4th generation iPhone is totally different from anything we’ve ever seen?

Gizmodo Secret iPhone

Maybe the likelihood of a completely new iPhone design is slim, but if any company were to pull such a stunt, it would be Apple.

“You thought you had us figured out? Muhahaha!” — Steve Jobs, before he sprints off the WWDC stage into a cloud of smoke

Just sayin’. Would it surprise you?

No More Unlimited Data for iPhone on AT&T: Does it Tick You Off?

iPhone No More Unlimited Data AT&T

Thought unlimited data on your iPhone was too good to be true? It is now. AT&T has removed the option of unlimited data for smart phones and will begin charging new users based on how much data they use.

There are two new plans available for smart phone users. One, dubbed DataPro, offers 2GB of data per month for $25. If you go over, you are charged another $25. A second plan offers 200MB of data per month for $15, and if you exceed it, you’ll pay another $15 for 200 more megabytes.

This sucks if you ask me. Part of the magic of having an iPhone is the ability to do anything at any time without having to worry about data charges. Now, iPhone users will be forced to pay more to ration their data use, instead of AT&T paying more to upgrade its damn network already. What’s more, US iPhone users don’t have the choice to switch to another carrier because of AT&T and Apple’s exclusivity deal. This is not progress, it is regress, as Cult of Mac writer John Brownlee accurately points out:

&%$@ you, AT&T. Has there ever been a more worthless telecom? After three full years of supplying terrible service to their iDevice customers and skimping at every turn on using their profit from iPhone contracts to substantially improve their 3G networks, they’re now raising prices for inferior service. — Opinion: AT&T’s New Data Plans Make iPhone Look Worse Than Android

Time to go to Android on Verizon, where you can get unlimited data for $29.99. Either that or jailbreak/unlock your iPhone and use another carrier.

What’s Your Opinion?

Does it bother you that AT&T has removed the unlimited data plan for iPhone? Is it enough to make you switch to Android? Let me know what you think in the comments.

iPhone Was Originally an iPad, Says Steve Jobs

iPad to iPhone: I am your father.

Did you know: Apple created the iPad before the iPhone. The iPad is not a giant iPhone or iPod Touch like we thought it was. More accurately, the iPhone is a mini iPad. Apparently, Steve Jobs revealed this secret at the D8 Conference, according to Mashable’s Barb Dybwad:

Walt then asks him why he built that operating system on a phone first instead of a tablet. Jobs then drops a reveal: “I’ll tell you a secret. It started on a tablet first.” He had an idea of a multi-touch display you could type on, and six months later his team had a prototype display to show him. After handing it off to Apple user interface experts who “got the inertia rolling,” Jobs realized, “My god, we can build a phone out of this,” and shelved the tablet because at the time the phone was more important. “When we got our wind back and thought we could do something else, we took the tablet back off the shelf.” — Steve Jobs at D8 on Flash, iPad and the Post-PC Era

Crazy to think the iPad was conceptualized before the iPhone was even a thought. Despite occasional setbacks, Apple is great at keeping things quiet. To think, Microsoft was working on what they thought would be a revolutionary Surface, while Apple was quietly plotting the silver, small and sleek iPad.
